Animistic Tech is a research project that explores the intersection between non-human intelligences, post-natural technologies, and bio procces, drawing inspiration from post-ancestral ecologies and cosmologies. It aims to develop a Roots Cognition IA Model* , a non-Western artificial intelligence model incorporating and learning from Vegetal cognition Research* , generating new technological languages and addressing current and future ecological crises in the era of post-anthropocene and post-capitalism. Living Research Artefact* is a device designed to observe and learn from Roots behavior interacting with soil, using cameras and sensors that respect soil darkness, allowing data collection without disturbing the natural environment. The purpose is to study root Habituation processes, how they adapt and predict their environment, and use this data to feed the Roots Cognition IA Model, an AI based on Habituation Learning from Roots. The artifact’s design allows natural and beneficial root-soil interaction, fostering life instead of control, and promoting growth in harmony with natural rhythms. The main objective is to better understand root languages and how they can inspire new technological paradigms, with an innovative and respectful approach to nature, reflecting love and respect instead of dominance.

Vegetal cognition refers to the intricate system of mental processes and behaviors present in plants, evolving through cognitive plasticity, a fundamental feature in their adaptive capacity. Cognitive plasticity in plants is demonstrated by their ability to adjust responses and strategies to changes in the environment, enabling goal-oriented adaptive behavior.

This flexible capability in plants is evident in their anticipatory ability, where they can foresee changes in their environment and adjust their responses proactively. Furthermore, plant cognition involves risk assessment, as plants evaluate environmental conditions to make decisions that maximize their survival and reproduction.

Living Research Artifact*

The artifact is designed to record root growth data, focusing on tracking their habituation learning. In the first prototype, the goal is to observe root development under different scenarios of sound frequencies ranging from 300 Hz to 250 Hz at specific times, while minimizing interference and respecting darkness to simulate natural underground conditions.

Internally, the artifact incorporates electronic components to monitor data such as humidity, light, and electricity. Additionally, it includes an integrated camera that captures photos every minute to facilitate data collection. These images and data are transmitted through an IoT system to a decentralized database.

The artifact's design is conceived not to isolate roots from their natural environment, allowing them to maintain continuous connections with the soil without imposing dominance through forms. Since the outset of this exploration, the focus has been on designing processes that foster the creation of other life systems, seeking to establish partnerships with other intelligences and promoting respect for the interaction between roots and the soil.

THE NARRATIVE OF INSTINCTIVE EXPLORATIONS

After conducting my explorations in conjunction with relevant interventions, I find myself in a moment of reflection where I return to question and recall my initial inquiry: What is the future of the ancestral? By "ancestral," I encompass rooted knowledge, evolutionary memory, and collective language that shape the diverse forms of culture within each family, extinction,live and dead, communities, and species interacting with our planet. It is through this reflective process that I have reformulated my initial question and developed the narrative which I term ANIMISTIC TECH .
